Guidelines for Note card Painting Contest

The chapter will be producing note cards from paintings by the talented artists in our midst. The cards will be given as thank you gifts to visiting teachers, used in the Memory Box Program communications and sold in our Chapter Store as well as the Greens Show. We look on this endeavor as an opportunity to share a true representation of our chapter and the varied painting styles that make up our group. It is our hope that this will also an on going fund raiser.

At this time we are planning on having a group of 12 cards printed (this number may fluctuate either way). In order to encourage as well as thank those that will be submitting a design for consideration, the chapter will be awarding a free chapter meeting (not a seminar or retreat day- sorry) to each designer submitting card designs (one free meeting per designer regardless of how many designs submitted). The free meeting will be awarded for meetings held in the year 2009.

Below are some rules, guidelines, and tips to help members planning on submitting a painted panel.

RULES:

-Each person planning on painting a panel can check out a pre cut 6 ¼ X 7 ½ Masonite panel at the next chapter meeting. Please call if you need to have one mailed. It is our hope to have the panels picked up in order to keep the costs down. You may cut your own panel from Masonite if it is more convenient. The size must be the same as those offered by the chapter and we cannot reimburse you.

-All designs MUST be totally original. We are all aware of the legalities of Copyright violations and want to avoid any complications.

-The painted panels submitted will become the property of the Coast to the Cascades Chapter of the National Society of Decorative Painters.

-During the 2nd annual Retreat in October, the painted panels will be put on display with a tin can by each one. Each member present will be given 12 beans with which to mark their favorite 12 panels by dropping a bean in the can positioned by each of their favorites.  The 12 cans with the most beans will be the cards chosen to be printed.

GUIDELINES AND TIPS:

-Tape off ¼ inch around the outside of the panel. Basecoat within the taped area.

--The colors on the new $20.00 bill are hard to copy (that’s why they were picked!), try to avoid those colors as a base coat

-- Teal, peachy, blue-ish green, middle value and bright blue are difficult to print well consistently. Dark Blue is fine.

--  Can be painted either Vertical or Horizontal.

-Leave a 1/8 inch ‘breathing space’ around all 4 sides of your basecoat. Try not to have design lines or your signature in this area. Cropping of the design can sometimes slice off anything painted in this area.

-         Once the background is painted in and the tape is removed-Do not outline around the background color with a contrasting color. Once again, an issue with cropping of the design.

-Sign your name please! The back of the printed card will have your name as the artist and member of CCC, but it is good to have a painted     signature on the panel front.

--please print your name on the back of your panel with a black Sharpie. An aid to make sure the right name goes with the right card.

-The card design will be shrunk down to 4 ¼ X 5 ½, so very teeny tiny details may not come out on the final print.

Please do not be intimidated with this opportunity to be creative! All levels of painting experience are encouraged! This is a very talented group of painters - your contributions to the Doernbecher raffle projects, the ‘Ugly Onion’ of the raffle and the items brought to the Snowman Stampede at the Christmas party are proof that this chapter has every reason to be proud.

Do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions about this project. I hope that the short deadline will not discourage anyone. The project was only recently thought up, discussed and voted on. In order to take advantage of prime selling opportunities, we have to have the panels by the October retreat in order have the printing, packaging and pricing complete in time for the Greens Show the first part of December.

Sincerely,

Lori Larkey
